We’re seeing terrible side effects of phthalates in children and adults too. Reproductive damage, asthma, allergies, malformations and liver damage. Barry points out on his website that just 30 or 40 years ago, for example, these types of chronic conditions used to occur in one in 5,000 children. Today, babies are being attacked at unprecedented rates. For example, asthma is striking one in every 20 children. And it’s no wonder! Every minute that our babies are asleep in their little bed is another minute that they are within an inch of harmful toxins found in today’s mattresses.
Aidan has never slept in his crib. In fact we’ve converted his crib to a toddler bed and only recently has he started sleeping there for most of his naps and through the night. Now that he’s sleeping 12-14 hours a day in his own bed, having chemical free products shouldn’t stop at his sheets. Before Aidan was born we bought a lesser evil version of the vinyl-PVC mattress which was a piece of foam covered in plain cotton. Had I known there were such a thing as organic crib mattresses at the time there would have been zero hesitation to go buy one instead of our Ikea one.
I was very excited to replace Aidan’s foam mattress with a safe, organic Naturepedic mattress that I knew I would feel good about him using. We choose the Quilted Organic Cotton Deluxe mattress for review. Since we have an Ikea toddler bed I was crossing my fingers that it would fit since all of their products seem to be designed to fit only their accessories. But it fit perfectly! I had to laugh when we set it up because it was like a teeny little version of our king size mattress! The quilted top is soft, firm and honestly feels like a regular adult mattress! Complete with Orthopedic Innerspring system, and an Organic Cotton filling, this mattress is quite the luxury compared to the chunk of foam he was sleeping on previously! We’ve already made the decision to purchase an organic mattress for this next baby. After knowing what we know now, there’s no question.
