uv skinz: sun protective & chemical free swim wear

UV Skinz is a favorite of ours since I first reviewed the company last year here.  This year was extremely important for us though because we realized at Easter that our son Aidan has a sensitivity to sunscreen – more specifically the active ingredient in sunscreen called zinc oxide. After applying some to his face on a hot day outside while we were visiting the easter bunny, Aidan’s eyes started watering, they swelled and his eyelids and the skin around them turned a horrible shade of reddish purple.  His cheeks were red, his eyes were burning and even after we washed it off, his eyes continued to swell and water for a couple hours.

I suspected he had a sensitivity to zinc oxide after reviewing a white diaper cream previously, but was still unsure. After this recent incident, I knew that sun protection during our trip to Mexico in April and the upcoming summer months were going to be issues for us. But instead of deciding to turn Aidan into a guinea pig and test which sunscreens {natural or not} worked for him, the first thing I thought of was our UV Skinz shirt he had in the closet from last summer. Thankfully I had ordered it one size too big last year and it still fits him. This was perfect! I knew instead of relying on sunscreen, I could rely on sun protective swim wear from UV Skinz and didn’t think twice about not using sunscreen on him while we were in Mexico.  A wide brim hat, a protective swim shirt and long board shorts kept my little man burn free in the scorching sun.I’d occassionally put a little dab of sunscreen on his nose and pray he didn’t react but other than that, the only thought about sunscreen protection for my little man during the week we were there was “throw Aidan’s swim shirt on”. No worries of reapplying sunscreen every 30 minutes, no worries of the SPF not being high enough and no worries of allergic reactions.

This chemical free option {click here to read about the Sunscreen Hall Of Shame} for babies, kids and adults is pure genius. They feature large neckholes for easy on/off,  flat-lock seams so no irritating threads, they’re meant to fit like a tee which means comfort – no tight, restricting feel, they’re super lightweight and breathe. Aidan was in a long sleeve shirt for our trip to Mexico and he never complained of being uncomfortable and didn’t try to take his shirt off.

This summer, my boys are using {and I’m loving!} the baby and kids swim sets that include board shorts and a short sleeved UV protective shirt. Aidan’s in an adorable short sleeved blue Sharky set and Ethan is in a cute little surf’s up set.  I really enjoy that UV Skinz sizing grows with my children. Aidan can wear both 3T {from last year} and 4T this year. Ethan is 6 months old and the size 12-24 months fits him generously {but doesn’t look sloppy} and he’ll be able to wear it again next year too. These items aren’t just for swimming either – Aidan wears his shirts to the park on sunny days, he wears his board shorts to swim lessons and out for play.

{Ethan’s first time playing in the sun…he wasn’t sure what to think of it!}

Right now UV Skinz has a sale of 10% off AND they have a “Deep End”  sale going on where you can score shorts for $5.95 and shirts for $15.75! {Regular prices are $14.95-$28.95}
