Soy-based inks, biodegradable, sustainable and recyclable don’t really come to mind when I think about my running shoes. But leave it to Brooks to blend “green” and “performance” and create the ultimate eco-friendly running shoe.

BioMoGo is the most exciting environmental innovation to hit the sports industry. Brooks introduced the first biodegradable running shoe mid-sole that is made with a non-toxic, natural compound. Typical mid-soles last 1000 years in the landfill but the new technology that Brooks is using allows the mid-sole to biodegrade after 20-25 years. Even the shoe box packaging {which many of us probably don’t give much thought too} is eco-friendly. It’s made with 100% post consumer recycled content, created with water based inks AND adhesives {no VOCs}, the shoes are not stuffed and silica packets are non-existent since they’ve been found useless.  The shoes are still wrapped in tissue paper, but they’re using way less of it and it’s chlorine-free.

This is an incredibly lightweight shoe that is made with 75% recycled materials. The uppers feature element mesh that keeps feet cool, comfortable and protected. The soles are grippy for skid-resistance {no slipping on my treadmill}. They’re long-wearing and made with dispersed silica so they’re appropriate for wet or dry conditions if you’re running outside.

For me this running shoe felt very odd to put on at first. I wasn’t used to something so extremely lightweight – my other running shoes feel more substantial and a little bit of weight is something I’m used to. Now though, my Green Silence shoes feel normal and I appreciate how well constructed they are for their specific purpose – competition running. The heel is low and the toe box is roomy enough that your toes can spread while you’re running which helps you run fast. I also like that the tongue is attached so there is no shifting when you’re running hard. Once I have the shoe on and laced up they fit like a glove and stay that way until I’m finished.  I like them with and without socks…probably more with socks, but either way they didn’t blister my feet.

Typically this is used as a marathon shoe but I wear it while working out and running. For anyone just starting out with running or even if you’re a seasoned runner this baby is where it’s at if you’re looking for a lightweight, minimalist, barefoot-feel type of running shoe.
