You may have noticed this pretty little trio of essential oils sitting on my desk in the new closet office nook. Why? They’re been helping to keep me grounded and slightly less stressed than usual and mostly headache free while going through something that can be enjoyable, just as much as it is stressful — and that is the change of seasons, more specifically spring and spring cleaning. Also changes with Natural Mommie and undergoing a new website design (which is an invitation for stress!), signing up the children for new spring activities, volunteering, figuring out preschool and kindergarten, attending new school open houses….I guess just life in general tends to get a bit of out hand when I don’t step back and remember to breath.
And pause. And most importantly, inhale.
It does a world of good for us when we can step back and pause things for a minute, but as busy moms we forget. A tool that I’ve been using lately is essential oils. Before having the chance to try out dōTERRA I wasn’t exactly familiar with essential oils and the idea of using them seemed very foreign. However, when I was at the spa a few months ago, I became stuffy during my treatment and all the sudden I had a simple cottton pad with a few drops of peppermint essential oil propped under my nose and I was instantly clear within a few minutes. And moms, that’s as technical as it gets – a few drops here and there either on a cotton pad, your wrist, your little one’s shirt collar, or mixed into their playdough – and you’re opened up to a new world of healing through essential oils.

dōTERRA (meaning “Gift of the Earth”) essential oils represent the safest, purest essential oils available in the world today. Each of dōTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essentials oils is carefully extracted by a global network of skilled growers, distillers, and chemists ensuring a consistently powerful user experience. They are 100% pure aromatic extracts and contain no artificial ingredients, free of contaminants such as pesticides or other chemical residues.
As a beginner, a trio of lavender, lemon, and peppermint, three of the most popular oils, will provide you and your family with a great base to get started with. Wondering how to incorporate them into your life? Here’s a quick guide:
Lavender Essential Oil: The most popular oil, lavender has been cherished for its unmistakable aroma and its therapeutic properties for thousands of years. Lavender is widely used and accepted for its calming and relaxing qualities.
how to use:
- apply to bottoms of feet before sleeping for a restful sleep
- use to calm reaction to a bee sting or bug bite
- apply to wrists or inhale to easy motion sickness
- apply to back, hands or feet of a restless or agitated child (it works!)
Lemon Essential Oil: Lemon is known as a powerful aromatic, topical, and internal cleanser that can be used to complement many other oils. Diffusing lemon in a room can cleanse the air and uplift mood. It can also be used on surfaces throughout the home as a non-toxic cleaning booster.
how to use:
- apply topically for mood elevation
- apply directly to cold sores for relief
- add to drop of honey to sooth a cough or sore throat
- add to water to clean kitchen counters and stainless steel appliances
Peppermint Essential Oil: Peppermint is popular in countless forms, from toothpaste to chewing gum. As an essential oil, it is useful to ease breathing and as a digestive aid but most importantly for me, migraine and headache relief. This essential oil has been a miracle for me when it comes to headaches. The moment I feel one coming on, I dab some (undiluted) on my wrists, temples and the back of my neck and almost everytime it works.
how to use:
- apply topically to open sinuses and airways
- take one drop internally to calm indigestion or upset stomach
- breathe during a meal to help feel full
- spread on a children’s shirt before study time for alertness
Serenity Calming Blend: Serenity is a blend composed of individual oils with known calming properties which create a sense of well-being and relaxation. Lavender, sweet marjoram, roman chamomile, ylang ylang, sandalwood and vanilla bean create a subtle aroma ideal for aromatic diffusion or topical application.
how to use:
- for little ones, apply to the bottom of feet at bedtime
- add a few drops to a warm bath
- use in an aromatic diffuser
- apply to the back, hands or feet of restless child
Applied to the bottom of the feet at bedtime, dōTERRA®’s Serenity is an excellent way to promote restful sleep. Added to a warm bath

Note: Many can use essential oils undiluted directly on skin, but it’s a good idea to start with a carrier oil first, especially on children. Use 1/2-1/3 the amount for children that you would use for adults and mix with 1-2tbsp of carrier oil, then apply.
If you’re not sure where to start, these 3 essential oils are a good place. dōTERRA has an Introductory Kit with CD including peppermint, lemon and lavender essential oils and is completely ready to use right out of the package. You’ll notice the white writing on the back of the box which is some of the uses that I mentioned above.
dōTERRA products are sold exclusively through Independent Product Consultants who, working from home, introduce, educate and sell dōTERRA products locally through person-to-person contact. Thanks for the awesome review of the oils I sent you. I wish I had known about essential oils when my children were little, would have helped so much. Your readers might be interested in our Family Physician Kit that has the 10 basic oils for taking care of all your family’s health needs.
Thanks again for a great post.
You’re welcome Joni! Thanks for taking the time to explain how to use them and how beneficial they can be for my family AND for keeping it simple!!
Thanks for this information, it is handy to have the uses for particular essential oils all in one place. Another great think lavender oil is good for is burns, if applied immediately it can help prevent blistering and will take away the sting.
