I love this picture of my sons from earlier in the summer because this is what I see all day, everyday. Two boys in the fridge. I can only imagine what it’s going to be like when they’re teenagers!! These two are always hungry and always looking for a snack. They’d be perfectly content to live off yogurt and juice if I allowed it though I have to say, with all the incredibly delicious Greek yogurts available it’s even hard for me not to reach for one everytime I open the fridge! ;)
In order to keep my children happy and healthy and not hear “mama me hungweee” 1000 times a day, I like to keep a place in the fridge where they can go and pick out their own snacks. The “cool” drawer.
When I received the beautiful Frigidaire Gallery French Door Refrigerator, I knew as soon as I opened the “cool” drawer that it would be perfect for my children. It’s accessible to them and easy to open and close thanks to the easy glide drawers. I was worried that my boys would smash and crack the door on the open drawer like they did to the last fridge, but so far we’re okay since they can close the drawer without it getting stuck midway.
In their drawer below you’ll see it’s not perfectly organized as little fingers have been rummaging through it, but you can the idea. Lots of healthy snack options with the strawberries and blueberries stored higher up so that they have to ask me for them. I don’t quite trust them to run free with berries at the risk of berry stained fingerprints all over my furniture.
To give you an idea of size, I placed their lunch boxes in the drawer as well. There’s SO much space!! I’ll be doing this regularly in a few weeks once school starts up so it’s one less thing to do in the morning. Lunches (mostly) already made and ready to go just makes the morning flow so much better. And I’m going to attempt to keep it together this year for lunches. Mamas, we always start off with a bang, don’t we?! Must. Keep. The. Momentum. Going. HA! I’m really eager to keep myself organized and on top of things this year and not be “that” mom (being late, running out of ingredients for lunches and dinners, missing important dates, etc.,) It got to start somewhere and it begins with my fridge!
Sidenote: I would normally pack snacks into reusable glass containers and not plastic ziplocs but half my house is still in boxes…so…uh-hem. #dontjudge ;)
When it comes to grocery shopping for healthy snacks I don’t veer from the norm too much. It’s mostly whole foods with a few pre-made “treats” thrown in there. Lately though with summer and moving/unpacking mode there’s been more packaged treats and less homemade than I’d prefer but such is life in a state of chaos!
- lots of cheese (cheese strings, laughing cow, babybels, havarti, mozza)
- greek yogurt (large containers for breakfast and smaller portioned containers for on the go)
- 1-2 ingredient applesauce
- rice pudding (treat)
- hummus (and pretzels nearby in the fridge so they can dip)
- cottage cheese with pepper
- mini baby carrots
- cherry tomatoes
- sliced watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew
- sparkling water (to mix with a little bit of juice to make “pop”)
- lots of lemons for morning and midday lemon water
- small cans of flavored tuna (spicy thai chili is their favorite!)
- fresh salsa
Definitely having a designated area for snacks helps. Since it’s “their” area, they’re not rummaging through the fridge grabbing for things. You can see when you’re getting low on their favorites and it also helps to avoid buying more of what you already have. If I didn’t have this snack drawer, removable baskets with handles would be a must for my little ones to help themselves. I mentioned above that using ziplocs for snacks isn’t something I normally do, but for organization sake while my kitchen is still packed in boxes, this is what I’m doing. Or I portion out snacks in small cups to be reused throughout the day. I love using glass jars and containers though so I can’t wait to get everything unpacked and organized!
To maintain things I like to clean my fridge weekly. Those expiration dates tend to creep up on me (especially for the organic spinach and spring mix) so this helps keep everything in check so I’m not pulling out stinky greens for a green smoothie. Which has happened more times than I’d like to admit!
It’s a whole different ballgame for my husband too. Before he’d pull something out of the door and just shove it back in the front to teeter on the edge. I’m noticing now that since everything really does have a place and now that he can actually see everything, he’s putting it back where it belongs. #littlevictories. Everything has a place, there’s enough space for tall items and awkward shaped food and the fridge stays organized. It’s truly been such a blessing to have this stocked, huge fridge in place while we’ve been living in the middle of a huge renovation job these past couple months. I can’t wait to share more of how our farmhouse kitchen is coming along with a full shot of the progress we’ve made and how our Frigidaire appliances are holding up and fitting in with our country home!
