So essential oils? They always kinda felt a little hippy-dippy to me. I dabbled in them and used them in spurts but was never consistent and always had a fear that I would leave my house smelling like patchouli. Until recently I hadn’t taken the time to really use them regularly but now that I’m learning more and using essential oils consistently I’m a believer! And a little bit obsessed! They’ve come to the rescue many a time and I’m happy to report that I don’t smell….earthy. Good news for the modern, eco-friendly gal.
In my house there’s never ending boy energy and a mom who yearns for peace and quiet. There’s always a renovation on the go and never enough sleep to go around. There’s catch up days with yoga, lots of hugs, living room dance parties (and glasses of wine) but there’s also plenty of crashes, burns and meltdowns. I’m a busy mom and when I’m in the midst of afterschool activities, practices, and dinners on the go that quiet walk that re-charges me isn’t always possible. I need all the help I can get when it comes to maintaining a good attitude and serving my family happily!
After using my doTERRA essential oils faithfully for over a month now I’m amazed at what they can do for my mood and my sleep. Each night when I crawl into bed I dab a few drops of lavender on the bottoms of my feet, check my phone, do a little reading and within 15 minutes my eyes are heavy and I’m dropping my phone on my face. It used to take me upwards of an hour to feel that calm and relaxed! The first week I used lavender at bedtime I couldn’t believe how deep my sleeps were! The lavender is so pure and smells exactly like the lavender plants I have sitting on my porch. It’s also extremely multi-faceted which is exactly what you need to have around with kids in the house. Bugbite? I have an oil for that! Scrape? I have an oil for that! Burn? I have an oil for that! Blemish?…..you get the idea! Lavender is amazing.
My absolute favorite is my peppermint oil. Throughout the day whenever I start to feeling tense, anxious, irritated or annoyed or if my children are a little extra demanding I reach for it. I use about 15-25 drops in my diffuser and I’m feeling absolutely fantastic within a few minutes. If I’m out running errands I’ll either dab it on my sleeve, my wrist or my temples and I am instantly lifted and more focused. It’s especially healing for headaches and nausea and smells AMAZING in your home.
Balance is another favorite. It’s grounding, calming and very soothing. The scent is completely unexpected but intriguing! with Spruce, Rosewood, Frankincense and Blue Tansy. When my 6 year old comes home from school feeling frazzled I dab him with oil and it immediately shifts his focus and mood. To enhance my yoga practice I always dab Balance on before I begin.
On Guard (a Protective Blend) is fantastic for warding off illnesses…you can dab a couple drops on your children’s feet before bedtime and before school or use it in your diffuser so it cleans the air in your home.
Wondering what the diffuser is all about? Once I bought my diffuser (mine is called an AromaOm from a local wellness store ) it all started making sense and I recognized just how powerful essential oils are when combined with one of these amazing little things. Diffusers purify the air in your home without the help of heat. This means the integrity of your oils is preserved. Having your home smell like a spa with clean fresh air that is free of allergens and negative ions does fantastic things for everyone’s mood. My children are absolutely fascinated by my diffuser and love running their fingers through the vapour. They’re safe to use around children and pets, have auto shut-offs and the mist/vapor is cool. And so I don’t have my children dumping an entire bottle of essential oil into the diffuser, my rule is that I pour in the drops and they can turn on the diffuser and everyone is happy.
