I've been making this bread for probably a year now. It's the only recipe I'll likely ever use because it's just too easy and too delicious to bother trying a new one! The crust is always chewy and never rock hard and crumbly. Inside you're left with a hearty, holey, artisan looking bread that you'd pay $3-$4 per loaf at the grocery store. And this is guaranteed to be free from preservatives, artificial colors, flavors and other random chemicals. - 3 cups lukewarm water - 1 … [Read more...]

glitter french manicure

I've become an at home manicure queen and actually really enjoy the quiet time that comes with painting my own nails. I'm not into nail art with intricate designs or crazy color combinations...in fact almost all of my polishes are pale pinks or reds with a few bottles of pretty glitters to switch things up once in a while.  THIS look is one of my favorites. It's sweet, clean, classic, elegant and still feels slightly princessy without being over the top. - pink polish (I used a … [Read more...]

LEMON WATER NATURAL MOMMIE

Dehydration leads to water retention which leaves you with headaches, an irritable mood, stress, anxiety, dry skin, breakouts, and probably the most noticeable on women? A bloated belly. Dehydration = water retention and the only way to get rid of it is to simply drink more water. Assuming you're eating relatively well, exercising a few times a week and keep your sodium intakes in check, the belly bloat will disappear fast once you up your water. Add in some fresh squeezed lemon and you'll … [Read more...]

egg cups 100

Starting my boys off right with a good amount of protein first thing in the morning is essential, so I love coming across new ways to prepare eggs. And of course, the easier the better, which is exactly the case with these egg cups. They take no more than a few minutes to put together and only 10ish minutes in the oven (depending on how cooked you like your yolk). On Saturday mornings they are fantastic topped with homemade hollandaise sauce and alongside a bagel or … [Read more...]

line drying in the winter

It's winter. Not officially, but it's here. When it's cold enough to have frosty eyelashes and need to pre-heat the vehicle for 15 minutes before school, it's winter. With summer gone and the colder weather here to stay I was feeling desperate for the gorgeous smell of line dried laundry so I finally decided to try something I've been wanting to for years - "freeze drying" my blankets. It's nothing new...and in fact a perfectly normal way of life for most of our great aunts, grandmothers and … [Read more...]

PAINTING WITH CRAYONS 2

We found this really great egg shaped rock on one of our visits to the river. My husband wanted our boys to paint it so he could sit it on his desk at work.  So instead of slathering a bunch of craft paints globbed all over it, I googled "painting rocks" and came across a really unique method of "painting" that creates a beautiful work of art using....crayons. Crayons! Beautiful, hey? I loved watching my oldest create this today. It's without a doubt my favorite project to … [Read more...]

honey,garlic and lemon

I'm surprised it's happened already with just 7 days of school under our belt, but here we are. My little boy already has his first cold of the school year.  And I'm feeling a tickle in my throat....so I'm sure my 10 days of sniffles and coughs isn't far behind. I've tried hot lemon tea with cayenne pepper before but I'm sure I waited too long and my cold was already making itself at home. Hopefully I'll get to this one soon enough and won't have to suffer! Check out Good Food Matters for a … [Read more...]

vanilla perfume

One of the most searched posts on Natural Mommie is how to make vanilla perfume. Since it's so popular I thought I'd pull it from The Archives and share it with you again today for any new readers who haven't come across it yet. Enjoy! Ever since The Body Shop reformulated their vanilla perfume from smelling like actual vanilla beans that was really lovely and caramelly in the early 90s to their current flowery vanilla that’s on their shelves now, I’ve been on the hunt for a “real” … [Read more...]

Screen shot 2012-03-01 at 12.35.46 AM

I loved playing with silly putty when I was little...favorite thing ever. Was right up there with neon leggings, pompom socks and snap bracelets.  I'm not sure if you can still buy this in stores anymore so the alternative? Whip up your own!  There's a couple different ways to make it, one being with liquid starch (didn't have on hand) or the other way with borax (which I had) so we'll just go with that recipe! It's ridiculously easy and there's a lot of give to the recipe. I'm positive that … [Read more...]

how to make a heat bag

I saw this tutorial floating around on pinterest and decided to make one for my boys to warm up to when they come in from playing out in the snow. However, turns out it can be transformed into a weapon (is there anything that a 4 year old boy can't turn into a weapon??) so I quickly called dibs and have been popping it in the microwave throughout the day for myself! Surprisingly, Babylegs are the perfect shape and width to wrap around my neck/shoulders. And since the material is stretchy I can … [Read more...]
