how to: make your own (upcycled) heating bag

By Amanda · Comments (2)
Friday, February 3rd, 2012

I saw this tutorial floating around on pinterest and decided to make one for my boys to warm up to when they come in from playing out in the snow. However, turns out it can be transformed into a weapon (is there anything that a 4 year old boy can’t turn into a weapon??) so I quickly called dibs and have been popping it in the microwave throughout the day for myself!

featured image how to: make your own (upcycled) heating bagSurprisingly, Babylegs are the perfect shape and width to wrap around my neck/shoulders. And since the material is stretchy I can actually walk around without it falling off my neck like the magic bag does. And it doesn’t weigh much – who wants something heavy pressing on their shoulders at the end of a long day?!

SO, this little gem takes no time at all to make — maybe 10 minutes of stitching by hand. And you can get your children involved with the sewing if you trust them with a needle and thread (I don’t yet)  or just have them to do the pouring.

- about 2 cups of rice

- a legwarmer (or stretchy pant leg or sock with the toe cut off…)

- canning ring (optional – see below)

Grab a babyleg.

Stitch up one end. Nothing fancy, obviously….look at mine.

IMG 3131 how to: make your own (upcycled) heating bag

Done. Onto the rice.

IMG 3130 how to: make your own (upcycled) heating bag

To make it easier for my son to pour the rice into the sock, I slipped a canning ring into the end so he could do it all by himself without me the babyleg open for him.

Fill it up to just about the top (quality control, doing his job)

IMG 3122 how to: make your own (upcycled) heating bag

Now, just stitch up the other opening…

IMG 3121 how to: make your own (upcycled) heating bag

 And you’re done.

IMG 3125 how to: make your own (upcycled) heating bag

Pop it in the microwave for 1 minute then warm up on the couch after playing outside to the point of exhaustion. Try not to whip it around your head 457 times and subsequently stretching it about 5 inches longer than it should be  ;)

Oh, my big boy. I can hardly believe you used to crawl around in those just a short time ago.

my before & after: eyelash extensions and what to expect!

By Amanda · Comments (12)
Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Since the new year, I’ve decided that this was the year to get it together. Get more sleep, get up earlier, work out, finish my coffee without warming it up 4 times, be more organized, take the time to shower AND exfoliate  ;), put on makeup everyday, do my hair and really just work on taking care of the person who has to take care of everyone else. I know it makes me a better mama when I actually get out of my jammies before naptime. Maybe it’s because I took a few minutes for myself, or there’s a little piece of me feels like the old me and I like it.

So, in keeping with my plan, two weeks ago I had eyelash extensions put on.

Say what?

A stay at home mom…natural mommie…eyelash extensions, um, why?

Something you  may not know about me…I’m a girly girl through and through and a little bit makeup crazed. Anything remotely related to makeup, skincare, hair – I need to know more about it and try it for myself. That is, if it’s safe and preferably non-toxic. Also, my eyes are somewhat sensitive and as “gentle” as natural mascaras are claiming to be, they’re definitely not scoring well on the EWG which explains the stinging that I (and many others) have experienced. Lash extensions are hypoallergenic and perfect for anyone with eye sensitivities or allergies to mascara.

I was excited to try them but admit I was hesitant about the idea of anyone coming near my eyes with something semi permanent (individual lash extensions typically last 4-8 weeks) and the words surgical grade adhesive glue on my eyelashes was a little nerve wracking.

But turns out, getting professional lashes is completely relaxing. Most girls fall asleep after a few appointments. I almost did. The white strips you see under my eyes are actually cooling gel pads infused with collagen and elastin to reduce undereye circles so not only will your lashes look amazing at the end of your appointment, but also your whole eyes will be completely refreshed! My eyes felt hydrated and my circles somehow disappeared.

Friends, let me tell you. Realizing my 29th birthday was right around the corner (and not entirely thrilled about it) combined with feeling blah from not taking the time for myself lately AND being a completely exhausted mommie of boys? Getting lash extensions was just about as fabulous as spending 3 hours at a salon and walking out with a brand new ‘do.  I honestly felt brand new. And I looked (and still do look) alive without all the extra work.

From start to finish my experience was wonderful. Courtney, the owner of Lash Affair in Edmonton was professional, easy to talk to, and has been doing lashes for a long time (and only lashes – not just lashes on the side…), and made me feel at ease by answering any questions I had.  She disclosed all the brands that she uses and not because I asked. Tip: be very hesitant of anyone doing lashes who will not disclose what products they’ll be using on your eyes. It’s not a good sign.

Here’s the run down of what to expect at Lash Affair:

- flip through the lookbook to decide on what type of lashes you’d like depending on what fullness and length you’re after

- get cozy on a massage table complete with blankets and a comfy pillow

- feel completely pampered with cooling gel pads on your eyes

- Courtney (or Emily) will start to adhere individual lashes to your natural lashes (you’ll hardly feel a thing since their touch is so light!)

- after about 1-1.5 hours you’re done!

- admire your new lashes and remember no touching or getting them wet for 24 hours while the adhesive sets completely

- go home and wink at your husband. Trust me, he’ll love them!

Don’t worry about avoiding certain activities – I’ve exercised, went swimming and even wore makeup the same day I had them put on! The only thing you have to be conscious of is not using anything oil based. This isn’t very hard since most products are oil-free but check your ingredients list.

IMG 27531 my before & after: eyelash extensions and what to expect!

I still can’t get over how natural they look. They keep with the shape and curve of my eye and are feather light. And since nothing is adhered to the eyelid I never feel them on my lashes (except when I wash my face or touch them). Since this is my first time with extensions, I can expect to need my first “mini fill” (new lashes applied to any new lashes than have grown in since the last application) at the 2 week mark.  But after I’ve grown accustomed to having lashes, a fill is only required every 3.5 weeks.

Below is a picture from today. It’ll soon be 2 weeks since I had them applied and they’re still looking lovely. The lashes that have already shed naturally (with an extension attached) are somewhat noticeable, but this is why you need a fill – in the slight gap that I have there actually are new lashes there that the fill lash would be applied to (they’re light and are hard to see in this picture since I’m not wearing mascara).

If you’re already happy with the length of your lashes but are tired of curling them Lash Affair offers what’s called LashLift. This adds the perfect curl and darkness to the lashes for 6 weeks without having extensions put on.  More info is available at www.lashaffairlounge.com  Also be sure to fan Lash Affair on facebook and on twitter because there are giveaways to be won! And there’s a ton of before/after pictures to check out. They’re stunning!

If you have any questions, leave them here on the post!

in the kitchen: simple oatmeal berry muffins

By Amanda · Comments (22)
Monday, January 30th, 2012

These delicious mini muffins are a staple in our house because they’re a quick one bowl recipe with ingredients that I always have in my pantry.  I make them about once a week to have on hand for snacks, breakfasts, lunch bags,  bedtime snacks — really, when isn’t a muffin convenient?  I make them in mini muffin tins so they are the perfect size for little hands.  muffin final in the kitchen: simple oatmeal berry muffins

The recipe isn’t fussy and doesn’t call for a ton of ingredients (inexpensive!) which means  I can have them ready for my boys in under 15 minutes from start to finish. Or if the children are helping me bake (usually the case!) I can let them do most of the work themselves.  Dump, mix, dump, mix :)

It’s not a super sweet muffin – the small amount of sugar and berries seem to make them just right. They’re also filling from the oatmeal but not dense and the addition of frozen fruit keeps them moist.

Screen shot 2012 01 26 at 11.11.08 AM3 in the kitchen: simple oatmeal berry muffins- 1 cup of flour

- 1 1/4 cups of rolled oats

- 1/4 cup sugar

- 1 tbsp baking powder

- 1/2 tsp salt

- 1 beaten egg

- 1 cup milk

- 1/4 cup oil

- 3/4 cup of frozen berries (I use a frozen mix from costco – blueberries, raspberries & blackberries. Fresh works too.)

Screen shot 2012 01 26 at 11.10.57 AM3 in the kitchen: simple oatmeal berry muffins

Combine flour, rolled oats, sugar, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Give it a stir. Add in milk, egg, oil and stir until dry ingredients are moistened. Gently fold in frozen berries.

Spoon into greased muffin tins (mini or full size) to almost full.

muffin 6 in the kitchen: simple oatmeal berry muffins

Bake at 425 degrees for about 8 minutes (for mini tins) or until they’re golden.

Makes about 24-28 mini muffins or 12 full size.

P.S. definitely eat with a swipe of butter over the top ;)

how to: make foaming handsoap for $0.03 & skip the chemicals

By Amanda · Comments (15)
Friday, January 27th, 2012

When little ones are learning to wash their hands properly foaming hand soap saves mommies a lot of hassle. But the price of it is ridiculous, especially when you have a 4 year old who thinks it’s hilarious to fill the sink with foam (otherwise known as pouring $5 worth of foaming handsoap down the drain while I’m not looking). I also want to avoid ingredients like triclosan so making my own takes care of that.

Would you believe me if I told you that one bottle of your $2.00 dish washing liquid will make almost 50 bottles of foaming hand soap?  True story. Works out to be about $0.03 a bottle. If you already have a foaming handsoap dispenser, you’re golden. This DIY will cost you pennies. Let’s get started!

- 1 tbsp of your favorite eco dish washing liquid

- a measuring spoon (or eyeball it)

- warm water

IMG 2940 how to: make foaming handsoap for $0.03 & skip the chemicals

Pour into your empty foaming soap dispenser.

Or skip those above steps entirely and just pour about 1tbsp of dish washing liquid directly from your bottle into your dispenser  ;)

Slowly add warm water to your dispenser, leaving enough room for the pump. Swirl it gently to mix together.

End result? Foamy hand soap that won’t make you angry when your children use 43 pumps to wash their hands.

our favorite winter hats: cute capes ‘n’ caps (free shipping & giveaway)

By Amanda · Comments (240)
Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Cute Capes ‘n’ Caps include a variety of handmade double-lined capes and beautifully crochet and knit hats for newborns, infants and children for every season. For the winter, work at home mom, Ramona came up with the “snowflake jester hat” {$32} last year – a heavier weight hat that kept my boys warm in the coldest weather up North. This year they’re wearing her Teddy Bear Hats and just as I expected, the hats are holding up wonderfully and are keeping my boys toasty warm in the coldest weather.

IMG 2038 our favorite winter hats: cute capes n caps (free shipping & giveaway)

The thing about buying handmade is that you can usually have your item customized. I asked Ramona if she would double line the teddy hats since we spend a ton of time outside playing in the snow. And knowing that weeks go by  where the temperature is stuck at -40 degrees, they needed to be substantial. I also wanted their hats to match their winter coats, so I emailed Romona a picture and she color matched them up perfectly!

Here’s a close up picture of the hat so you can see how thickly it’s knitted . That’s the top layer. Underneath is a really thick and warm polar fleece liner that snaps into place with 3 tiny snaps under each ear/chin flaps.  This hat has some serious padding that’s kept their little heads safe after falling on slippery ice and snow more than a handful of times. When it warms up, we’ll remove the liner which also double as a helmet liner for skating/hockey lessons.

Here is Aidan in his old jester hat from last year (minus the snowflake tips that he decided to unravel during a long car ride….). It’s a bit small now but it sure held up!

Thanks Cute Capes ‘n’ Caps for keeping my boys toasty enough to play outside for hours!

Sidenote: if you’re lucky enough to be snuggling an itty bitty newborn right now, you have to see Ramona’s newborn cocoons and aviator hat! So adorable.
