Cute Capes ‘n’ Caps include a variety of handmade double-lined capes and beautifully crochet and knit hats for newborns, infants and children for every season. For the winter, work at home mom, Ramona came up with the “snowflake jester hat” {$32} last year – a heavier weight hat that kept my boys warm in the coldest weather up North. This year they’re wearing her Teddy Bear Hats and just as I expected, the hats are holding up wonderfully and are keeping my boys toasty warm in the coldest weather.

The thing about buying handmade is that you can usually have your item customized. I asked Ramona if she would double line the teddy hats since we spend a ton of time outside playing in the snow. And knowing that weeks go by  where the temperature is stuck at -40 degrees, they needed to be substantial. I also wanted their hats to match their winter coats, so I emailed Romona a picture and she color matched them up perfectly!

Here’s a close up picture of the hat so you can see how thickly it’s knitted . That’s the top layer. Underneath is a really thick and warm polar fleece liner that snaps into place with 3 tiny snaps under each ear/chin flaps.  This hat has some serious padding that’s kept their little heads safe after falling on slippery ice and snow more than a handful of times. When it warms up, we’ll remove the liner which also double as a helmet liner for skating/hockey lessons.

Here is Aidan in his old jester hat from last year (minus the snowflake tips that he decided to unravel during a long car ride….). It’s a bit small now but it sure held up!

I know I’m not alone when I say that some days my children don’t roll out of their jammies until well into the afternoon. And by afternoon I mean right before daddy walks through the door for dinner. Let’s be real. Jammies are usually involved in running errands around the city more often than I’d like to admit, but the thing is? They’re comfy. They come in adorable designs. And some days it’s not worth the battle to wrangle an alligator a two year old.

But stuff that worries me about having my boys in jammies for a minimum of 14 hours a day? Flame retardants, toxic dyes and not so natural materials. Fleece sleepwear (not all fleece clothing) is required by law to be treated with flame retardant chemicals.  (A tip I found on thedailygreen.com was if your clothing says “not intended for use while sleeping” it generally implies it’s not treated with flame retardants)

So what’s a mama to do to avoid the chemicals?

Get back to basics, ditch the synthetics and stick to natural fibers in a snug fit. Mini Mioche is a brand that I love seeing on both my boys. We first tried their basics and layering collection of organic children’s clothing back in 2010 and the pieces that the boys haven’t yet grown out of are still a staple in their closet. We have a family of tea and coffee drinkers and we all like our them different strengths! A single cup brewer has vastly simplified things for us when we’re entertaining family and friends and TASSIMO by Bosch is our current favorite around here. This solid, high quality brewer uses barcode technology which means the system reads every T DISC (the little pod thingy that holds the grinds) individually and adjusts the temperature, water volume and brew time. This way every coffee, tea, latte and cappuccino is made exactly the way it’s meant to be – perfect. It takes about 1 minute to make one cup and it’s immediately ready for the next one. And there is no taste transfer even after making something as potent as espresso!

TASSIMO just released their new Carte Noire (France’s #1 coffee!) and Gevalia blends and thankfully my father in law was visiting us when they arrived, because he loves a dark roast coffee. I’m not a fan of bold coffees and the jitter it gives me, so my father in law did the testing, which was perfect! He especially enjoyed the Carte Noire Americano and the Gevalia Dark House Blend. Dark roast lovers, unite!

When it comes to black tea, I’m very particular about which one I drink, and I haven’t found any brand out there that I enjoy more than Red Rose Orange Pekoe. I received the Twinnings Orange Pekoe to try but was unfortunately disappointed and will stick with my Red Rose for my morning tea.

We did, however, enjoy the new Cadbury Hot Chocolate. It tastes similar to speciality hot chocolate especially when you add a spoonful of whipping cream!

Another beverage I’m enjoying is the Nabob Decaf Cappuccino. I can’t drink coffee in the afternoon or evening unless I plan to be up all night, so this option is perfect for me when I want to relax and enjoy a hot cup. And it’s only 60 cals, 3 grams of sugar and 4 grams of fat  ;)

Seems like everytime we’re out running around, I spot someone grabbing a TASSIMO off the shelf, and it’s no wonder why – what a wonderful Christmas present this is! Wondering about the “waste” of the T-Discs? Not to worry, everything from the packaging to the disc itself is recyclable. Just peel back the foil, give it a rinse, and pop the plastic in your blue bin.

I admit I don’t entirely understand the whole “man and his grill” thing but it’s their deal and usually I just let my husband take credit for not burning everything *I* (ahem!) prepared! I do understand the need for good tools in the kitchen though since you really do get what you pay for.
