green smoothie

I get asked a lot if I juice or blend for my green smoothies and the answer right now is blend - mostly because I find it quick and easy and clean up is a cinch with a magic bullet. I'm learning though that by juicing you're allowing the nutrients to make it to your blood stream and cells a lot quicker since your body doesn't have to go through the process of digesting all that fiber from the fruits and vegetables you just blended. For the green smoothie challenge that I've been taking part … [Read more...]

I've been making this bread for probably a year now. It's the only recipe I'll likely ever use because it's just too easy and too delicious to bother trying a new one! The crust is always chewy and never rock hard and crumbly. Inside you're left with a hearty, holey, artisan looking bread that you'd pay $3-$4 per loaf at the grocery store. And this is guaranteed to be free from preservatives, artificial colors, flavors and other random chemicals. - 3 cups lukewarm water - 1 … [Read more...]

loaded oatmeal

Starving after you eat your morning oatmeal?  The trick to making your breakfast oatmeal stretch until your next snack or lunchtime is to load it up with protein and fiber via nuts, seeds and coconut.  And it'll be much more enjoyable for the entire family when it's packed with something crunchy and sweet. To make things simple, when I didn't make my crockpot oatmeal or don't have the time to make steel cut oatmeal on the stove, instead of having to figure it all out in the morning prep a … [Read more...]

DSC_0122

Just about during every grocery run I find myself tweeting or facebooking my shock after what I read on ingredients lists when looking for healthier alternatives for my family. And I know it's something that you're interested in knowing more about based on the amount of emails, messages and comments about what brands I buy since I (mostly) don't eat or feed our children anything with artificial flavors, dyes or chemicals like EDTA and BHA. There's more, but that's a whole other post ;)  Short … [Read more...]

green smoothie easy

Day 2: spinach \\ pear \\ kiwi \\ mango \\ mandarin \\ water   I always use 2 cups of spinach, about 1/2-3/4 cup water or juice cut with water, and 1/2- 1 of each fruit. Organic mango is frozen and I use about 1/2 cup. How's the challenge going for you?  I find replacing one meal very easy and don't feel hungry at all - there's a lot of food in this mason jar!   … [Read more...]

When most of us make (fruit based) smoothies it's a lot of throwing in whatever we have in the fridge or fruit bowl along with some icecubes and juice or milk or both. It's simple. But then we tend to over-think green smoothie recipes and stress about what to use and how to not make it taste like grass or dirt. When it comes down to it really the only difference between a regular smoothie and a green smoothie is usually just a handful of something leafy and this doesn't have to change the taste … [Read more...]

2012 has been very healthful year for my family. We've eliminated all artificial flavors and colors and most chemicals from our diet...of course some things sneak in once in a while ;) but overall we're a very healthy family. But one thing we need to work on is more leafy green vegetables, so green smoothies are an easy way to ensure we're all getting more. 2013 means at least one green smoothie everyday for everyone in our family...well for 30 days straight at least during the 30 day green … [Read more...]

egg cups 100

Starting my boys off right with a good amount of protein first thing in the morning is essential, so I love coming across new ways to prepare eggs. And of course, the easier the better, which is exactly the case with these egg cups. They take no more than a few minutes to put together and only 10ish minutes in the oven (depending on how cooked you like your yolk). On Saturday mornings they are fantastic topped with homemade hollandaise sauce and alongside a bagel or … [Read more...]

PAINTING WITH CRAYONS 2

We found this really great egg shaped rock on one of our visits to the river. My husband wanted our boys to paint it so he could sit it on his desk at work.  So instead of slathering a bunch of craft paints globbed all over it, I googled "painting rocks" and came across a really unique method of "painting" that creates a beautiful work of art using....crayons. Crayons! Beautiful, hey? I loved watching my oldest create this today. It's without a doubt my favorite project to … [Read more...]

honey,garlic and lemon

I'm surprised it's happened already with just 7 days of school under our belt, but here we are. My little boy already has his first cold of the school year.  And I'm feeling a tickle in my throat....so I'm sure my 10 days of sniffles and coughs isn't far behind. I've tried hot lemon tea with cayenne pepper before but I'm sure I waited too long and my cold was already making itself at home. Hopefully I'll get to this one soon enough and won't have to suffer! Check out Good Food Matters for a … [Read more...]
